Directed by André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, The Last Voyage of the Demeter), the film departs from the lighthearted tone of earlier entries, opting for a grittier, myth-heavy atmosphere. The trailer opens with sweeping desert shots and ancient tombs awakening under a blood moon, as an ominous voice whispers: “The gods have not forgotten…”
Downey Jr. stars as Dr. Alistair Voss, a disgraced archaeologist obsessed with unlocking the secrets of immortality. When he unearths a forbidden sarcophagus deep beneath the ruins of Karnak, he unwittingly resurrects The Scorpion King, played once again by Dwayne Johnson, this time reimagined as an ancient warlord cursed with demonic rage and divine power.
“This isn’t the Mummy you remember,” says Øvredal. “It’s more brutal, more mythic, and far more dangerous.”
The trailer shows intense action sequences: collapsing temples, undead warriors rising from the sand, and face-to-face showdowns between Downey’s clever, haunted scholar and Johnson’s primal force of destruction. There are brief glimpses of Sophia Boutella as a mysterious desert priestess and Ben Barnes as a rival explorer with ties to ancient bloodlines.
Notably, The Mummy 4 connects lore from both Stephen Sommers’ classic trilogy and the 2017 reboot, teasing the beginnings of a new shared Dark Universe. Fans online are already speculating about crossovers and the return of familiar characters.
The Mummy 4 is set to hit theaters worldwide on December 19, 2025, promising a holiday season packed with ancient horror, blockbuster spectacle, and unexpected twists.
