Van Dijk reveals Liverpool’s massive bid for Isak after signing new long-term contract

Virgil van Dijk has officially signed a new contract with Liverpool, committing his future to the Reds until 2027. The Dutch defender, one of the cornerstones of Liverpool’s success in recent years, remains one of the highest-paid players at the club—on par with Mohamed Salah—earning a reported £400,000 per week.

Speaking to the press after his contract extension was confirmed, Van Dijk shared his excitement about continuing his journey at Anfield—and surprised many by revealing Liverpool’s determined push in the transfer market, especially their strong interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

“It’s an honour to stay at this club, to keep fighting for trophies, and to be part of the next chapter,” Van Dijk said. “Liverpool means a lot to me. The club trusted me when I came here, and I want to give everything back.”

He continued: “The new project under Arne Slot is exciting. There’s a vision here, a commitment to success. I know the club is working hard behind the scenes to bring in the right players. I can say this—Liverpool made a very serious offer for Alexander Isak. I’m not going to say the exact figure, but it was a huge bid, well over £80 million.”

The Dutch defender, now the longest-serving senior in Liverpool’s backline, praised Isak’s talent and potential impact: “Isak is an incredible striker. Quick, powerful, intelligent with his movement. I’ve played against him, and he’s a handful for any defender. If we can bring someone like that in, it could be a game-changer. It shows the club is ambitious.”

Van Dijk also touched on the importance of keeping the core of the team together, mentioning Salah’s recent contract renewal as a key moment: “Having Mo stay is massive. We’ve built something strong here, and continuity is important. When I saw he extended, I knew this was the right time for me too. We want to push for every title again.”

While Liverpool have not yet reached an agreement with Newcastle for Isak, Van Dijk’s comments suggest the club is willing to invest heavily to bolster its attacking options heading into the 2025-2026 season.

“We’re not here just to compete—we’re here to win. And that means having the best around you. If the club gets Isak, or any player of that calibre, we’ll be in a strong position,” Van Dijk concluded.

With both Van Dijk and Salah secured for the long term, Liverpool fans can expect more big moves in what could be a transformative summer window at Anfield.
