Tensions between George Russell and Max Verstappen have resurfaced following the Australian Grand Prix, as the Mercedes driver finally spoke out about their relationship after a history of heated exchanges.
Russell and Verstappen have been at odds since the end of the 2024 season, with Russell accusing the Red Bull star of ‘bullying’ after a controversial incident at the Qatar Grand Prix. The two have reportedly not spoken since, and their interactions at Albert Park did little to suggest that the rivalry has cooled.
After finishing third behind Verstappen and race-winner Lando Norris, Russell was asked about his current dynamic with the Dutchman. In a sarcastic tone, he responded: “Well, I guess it’s better than last year… but that’s not saying much.”
The post-race cooldown room also reflected the lingering tension between the two. While Norris and Verstappen engaged in friendly discussions, Russell remained on the sidelines, struggling to join in. Fans quickly noticed that Verstappen barely acknowledged Russell’s presence, hinting that their feud is far from over.
Adding to the drama, Russell made a shocking remark when discussing his rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli’s strong debut for Mercedes. He quipped: “Kimi’s already proving himself—maybe even better than Lewis at this stage. Who knows?” The statement, which seemingly downplayed seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton’s contributions to Mercedes, immediately sparked controversy.
When asked directly if his relationship with Verstappen had improved, Russell smirked and said: “Let’s just say, we’re not exactly texting each other goodnight.”
With the season just beginning, it looks like the battle between Russell and Verstappen—both on and off the track—is only heating up.
