Jurgen Klopp has addressed “Liverpool’s biggest problem” under new boss Arne Slot, highlighting a recurring issue that has plagued the team since his own early days at Anfield.
The left-back position has once again become a weak point for Liverpool, as seen in their recent 2-2 draw against Fulham. Klopp, reflecting on his past experience, noted that Slot faces a similar challenge he once encountered when he first arrived at the club.
“Left-back was a real problem when I took over. We tried everything – James Milner, Joe Gomez – but it was only solved when we brought in Andy Robertson. That position needed a natural player, someone reliable and consistent,” Klopp said.
Robertson, who proved pivotal to Liverpool’s success under Klopp after his £8m signing, is now part of the concern. At 30 years old, the Scottish defender is showing signs of decline, with his physicality and defensive errors becoming increasingly apparent. Fulham exploited these weaknesses, targeting Robertson with inverted runs and sharp passes, which ultimately led to his early dismissal after 17 minutes.
With Kostas Tsimikas sidelined by injury and Robertson suspended for the upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Southampton, Liverpool will be without a recognized left-back. Klopp emphasized the importance of recruitment to address the issue.
“Arne Slot and Liverpool must look at the market for a long-term solution. I always believed in finding smart deals – Robertson was a bargain, and it allowed us to strengthen other areas. The same approach is needed now,” Klopp added.
The former Liverpool boss pointed to the importance of Liverpool’s recruitment team, led by Richard Hughes, in identifying a reliable yet affordable player who can solidify the left side of the defense.
Arne Slot will hope to resolve this glaring issue during the January transfer window, as Liverpool aim to challenge for the Premier League title and fend off competition from rivals like Chelsea. Whether Slot can replicate Klopp’s success in solving the problem remains to be seen.
