Manchester United‘s summer recruit Andre Onana was guilty of a massive mistake during his debut at Old Trafford. The Cameroonian started the Red Devil’s pre-season fixture against RC Lens. And went on to play a crucial role in allowing the French outfit to score the opener. His mistake has attracted plenty of criticism from fans, with some even questioning his abilities.

The keeper’s blunder came during the 27th minute of the game. Florian Sotoca pounced on a poor pass from fullback Diogo Dalot, following which he attempted an outrageous lob from the center circle. Onana, who was caught way out of his life, scampered back desperately. But ultimately, he was unable to stop the effort from going in. While the goal can be attributed to a needless pass from Dalot, the keeper’s positioning left much to be desired.
Many fans online felt the same, as they grilled Onana for his mistake. Some even expressed greater concern over his positioning, as this isn’t the first occasion on which the keeper has been caught out. Others even called for David De Gea to return and take over the gloves once again.
After full-time, Onana was quick to put his hands up and acknowledge the mistake. The keeper took responsibility for conceding the goal saying, “I’m happy for the win. Of course, we can always be better. Some things we have to try to fix. Like I always say, I am responsible for everything especially when we concede goals. I’m the big man at the back so I take all the criticism, all the pressure on me. It was a great game for me and for the guys, some important goals and I’m happy for everything.”

Manchester United did well to stage a comeback after going down against the run of play. The Red Devils scored three goals in quick succession in front of a packed Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford made the scores level during the 48th minute, following which, Antony made it two in the 53rd. Casemiro cemented the victory by making it 3-1 for the home side, concluding a positive display from the side.
Continuing their pre-season campaign, United face Athletic Bilbao next at Old Trafford. The match will be their final friendly before their season kicks off against Wolves. And as such, fans will be expecting Erik ten Hag‘s team to be sharper than ever.
