Is the F-35 better than the F-22? And why was the F-22 program canceled?

In the ongoing debate over military aviation supremacy, the question of whether the F-35 is superior to the F-22 has reignited discussions about the future of U.S. air power. Both aircraft are hailed as fifth-generation stealth fighters, yet they are designed for fundamentally different roles. The F-35, a multi-role fighter, is equipped for air-to-air, air-to-ground, and electronic warfare operations, while the F-22 serves primarily as an air superiority fighter, engineered to dominate the skies.

The F-22 Raptor, developed in the 1980s, boasts unparalleled stealth and supercruise capabilities. However, its production was limited to 195 units due to high costs and budget constraints, with each aircraft costing approximately $334 million. In contrast, the F-35 Lightning II, introduced in 2015, was designed as a versatile platform for various military branches, achieving a more affordable price point of around $80 million per unit, which has led to larger production runs.

Stealth capabilities present another critical point of differentiation. The F-22 excels with a lower radar cross-section and advanced infrared signature reduction, making it less detectable than the F-35. Conversely, while the F-35 may not match the F-22 in raw stealth, its advanced electronic warfare suite provides significant situational awareness and self-protection, allowing it to effectively jam enemy radar and communications.

The F-22 program was ultimately canceled in 2011 due to a combination of factors, including budget overruns, operational challenges, and a strategic shift in U.S. military focus. The rising need for adaptable platforms in counterterrorism operations rendered the F-35 a more relevant choice for modern warfare.

As military needs evolve, the F-35’s multi-role capabilities may well define the future of air combat, while the F-22’s unmatched air superiority remains a testament to the heights of stealth technology. The question of which is “better” may ultimately hinge on the specific mission requirements of the U.S. and its allies in an unpredictable global landscape.
