Iran has unveiled its first aircraft carrier, the Shahed BAGI, in a bold move that could reshape military dynamics in the region. Released images and video by Iranian state media showcase the vessel, which is designed to enhance the capabilities of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in drone warfare. The Shahed BAGI features an angled flight deck and a ski jump launch system, reminiscent of advanced carriers like Russia’s Kuznetsov class and the UK’s Queen Elizabeth class.

Remarkably, this carrier was constructed from a converted commercial container ship, allowing Iran to build it on a tight budget. Measuring 240 meters long and 21 meters high, the Shahed BAGI is equipped to launch and recover up to 60 drones, alongside helicopters and missiles. A second container ship is also slated for conversion into a drone platform, indicating a strategic shift in Iran’s naval capabilities.

While the conversion method imposes limitations on combat performance compared to traditional carriers, the IRGC’s focus on drone operations allows for effective deployment without the need for manned aviation components. This development comes as the IRGC has increasingly relied on drone technology in various conflicts, notably in Syria, where they supported counterinsurgency operations alongside Russian forces.

The introduction of the Shahed BAGI raises alarms among regional adversaries, particularly Israel and the United States, as Iran’s sophisticated drones have demonstrated advanced stealth capabilities. A notable reconnaissance mission into Israeli airspace in 2018 showcased these drones’ ability to evade enemy defenses, hinting at the potential for surprise attacks from unexpected directions.

However, the new carrier’s effectiveness may be hindered by Iran’s lack of modern surface combat ships, leaving it vulnerable to air and missile strikes. Despite this, the carrier could significantly enhance Iran’s power projection, particularly in supporting allied governments and conducting joint exercises with local forces.

As tensions in the region escalate, the unveiling of the Shahed BAGI marks a pivotal moment in Iran’s military strategy, signaling a commitment to expanding its naval prowess and drone capabilities in the face of growing international scrutiny.
