Mexico has the second highest number of femicides in Latin America, according to the United Nations. A survey from Mexico’s statistics agency back in 2022 suggested more than 70 percent of 50.5 million women and girls aged 15 or older had experienced some kind of violence.
What To Know
A 911 call reported the death at the salon on Avenida Servidor Público, in the Colonia Real del Carmen neighborhood, about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office said.
The State Attorney General’s Office is conducting an investigation “with the goal of clarifying the death of a 23-year-old woman,” it said in a statment.
“According to initial investigations, she was at her establishment when a man entered the premises and apparently fired a firearm at her, 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ing her,” it added.
“The victim is a person with an active presence and influence on social media.”
Márquez was in her salon when a man arrived on a motorcycle to deliver a gift, who without warning shot Márquez in the chest and head before fleeing, El Imparcial reported. The suspect was not yet identified.
Márquez’s death appeared to be shown during a live broadcast to her fans on TikTok.
Social media posts purporting to show video of the moment have been widely shared online.
A Public Prosecutor’s Office agent, in coordination with investigative police officers, is on the scene gathering testimony and evidence, and experts from the Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences are processing the scene, securing and collecting evidence, officials said.
Earlier on Tuesday, a federal elected public official was shot and 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ed in the same area.
The victim was waiting about 8 a.m. to meet another person inside a plaza on Paseo Valle Real Avenue, a short walk from the scene of the influencer’s shooting.
“Several shell casings were found, apparently there were bodyguards, we don’t know if it was circumstantial,” State Prosecutor Salvador González de los Santos said.
Officials have not linked the two shootings.

Tributes have been shared online for Marquéz. Mexican Blogger Mundo De Misses wrote on Instagram: “Today with deep pain and much sadness we mourn the sensitive passing of the beautiful Valeria Marquez.”
The post called her a “brave entrepreneur,” who “was looking to get ahead in a country where it is a challenge day to day.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said in December: “”In the face of any femicide: zero impunity. In the face of 𝓈ℯ𝓍ual violence against women: zero impunity.”
What Happens Next
The investigation is ongoing. An autopsy and identification by family members will take place at Forensic Medical Service facilities, Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office said.
