Scottie Scheffler shows his true colors while easing to PGA Tour win

Peggy Nelson shared a hug with Scottie Scheffler after he won The CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Sunday, with the event being named after her late husband who was a professional golfer

Scottie Scheffler clinched his first PGA Tour win of the season at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and went over to hug Nelson’s widow, Peggy, moments after sinking the final putt.

Peggy still lives on the 85-acre Roanoke ranch that was owned by Byron after he retired from golf, and Scheffler made sure to show his respect and appreciation. Scheffler also showed his class after the first round, as he stayed late to sign autographs for fans.

Jordan Spieth finished fourth as he ended 19-under, but admitted that he was definitely better than the current World No. 1 in the past. For Scheffler, victory meant everything as he got emotional after the final round, when delivering his winning interview with CBS reporter Amanda Balionis while holding his 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦 son, Bennett.

“This tournament means a lot to me,” Scheffler told Balionis, as his voice trembled. “It’s my first start as a pro, 11 years ago, when I had my sister caddying for me – she’s back there too. It feels like a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice for little moments like these, and they’re pretty special.”

Scheffler also met Byron Nelson over 20 years ago, and when asked what he remembered from that encounter, he added: “He’s a great man, he was great for the game of golf. He was a great person and family man, and I’m proud to be the champion of his event.”

Scheffler is the world No. 1 for a reason, but this year has been more about Rory McIlroy as he’s enjoyed a stunning start to 2025. McIlroy is on Scheffler’s heels as the World No. 2, and his recent Masters win saw him close the gap.

However, Scheffler reminded everyone who is boss at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson after he tied the PGA Tour record for the lowest 72-hole score in history. Scheffler finished 31-under par across the four rounds, shooting 61, 63, 66, 63.

While it was a dominant win for Scheffler, Spieth also continued his momentum as he finished 19-under. The former World No. 1 hasn’t won a major since 2017, but shot 9-under on the final day and looks back to his best ahead of the upcoming PGA Championship.

Spieth respects Scheffler but admitted that it hurts seeing another golfer occupy the world No. 1 status after he surrendered his crown. “What he’s doing is very inspiring, what he’s been doing is inspiring given it wasn’t that long ago I was definitely better than him, and now I’m definitely not right now and I hate admitting that about anybody,” Spieth told reporters.

“But I just watched it, those first two rounds, and I’m like, ‘I gotta get better.’ It’s very inspiring. Obviously it’s at this event… but it could be anywhere. I’m not like jealous of him winning this event over any other, I’m jealous of anyone that wins any week.

“I wanna be the person there (who wins), and that’s my drive. When he does it, it’s nice because one, I just played with him these two rounds, but I’m also playing with him at home. I’ve got more of a gage on exactly where I need to be when I’m playing a lot of golf with him.

“He’s certainly earned this one. I don’t see it going anywhere but just fine for him going down the stretch, and I’m gonna be super pumped that – when Scottie wins, I’m happy, it doesn’t matter where it is. If I’m not gonna win, I like it when he wins.”

The PGA Championship begins on May 15, and Scheffler and McIlroy are joint-favorites to win the second major of the year. Spieth remains an outsider despite his recent form, and it’s the one major missing from his collection.
