As I reported earlier this month, Queensberry Promotions and DAZN have OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED that Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois will meet again on July 19th at WEMBLEY STADIUM! Unlike their first contest, Dubois now holds the IBF belt that Usyk vacated and Usyk now holds the WBC title he won from Fury – meaning that the WBA, IBF, WBO, WBC and Ring titles will all be on the line, making this yet another UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN! As we know, the first fight was a one-sided affair in favour of then-unified champion Usyk, who dominated every single round and dropped Dubois in the 8th before winning by 9th round knockout… …but the matchup generated widespread controversy (unnecessarily) for an incident in the 5th round as Dubois landed a low blow that sent Usyk to the canvas and prompted the referee to allow the Ukrainian to recover – as is standard procedure for a low blow. However, some observers think the punch was legal (it wasn’t) and that Dubois should have won by knockout (he really shouldn’t have as the ref never started counting and if he had, Usyk would have gotten up) – which is honestly the only reason why people have maintained interest in this particular matchup. Couple that with Dubois’ unceremonious gatecrashing of Usyk’s post-Fury II interview and Usyk’s newfound desire for revenge as a result and you’ve got an undisputed heavyweight clash that may represent a passing of the baton to the next generation. Since the first fight, Dubois has had significant career-best victories over Filip Hrgovic, Jarrell Miller and Anthony Joshua and will enter the ring with renewed confidence.
