Arne Slot Warns Liverpool Players, Hints at Darwin Núñez’s Finishing Struggles

Liverpool manager Arne Slot highlighted the team’s disappointment following a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park in Matchweek 29 of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

In the early kickoff on February 19, Liverpool were considered favorites and took the lead through Mohamed Salah. However, Aston Villa responded with goals from Youri Tielemans (38’) and Ollie Watkins (45+3’), turning the game in their favor before Trent Alexander-Arnold salvaged a point for the Reds.

The draw leaves Liverpool vulnerable at the top of the table, as Arsenal could close the gap to just five points if they beat West Ham in their next fixture. The Reds have now dropped four points in their last three games, giving their title rivals hope as the Premier League race intensifies.

Slot Disappointed with the Result

Speaking after the match, Slot expressed his frustration:

“The only reason we can be somewhat satisfied with a 2-2 draw is that Aston Villa had a clear chance late on to make it 3-2. They didn’t take it, so in that sense, one point is good.

“However, overall, I am not pleased. When Liverpool were trailing 2-1 at halftime, it didn’t reflect what had happened in the first 45 minutes. Looking at the number of chances we created, we should not be happy. That said, the team played a very good match. In football, when you concede from a set-piece, things can change very quickly.”

Núñez’s Missed Opportunity and Frustration

Darwin Núñez had a golden chance in the 69th minute, just after coming off the bench, but failed to convert. Slot commented on the miss, subtly hinting at Núñez’s inconsistent finishing:

“What I saw was an unbelievable pass from Conor Bradley and a strong run from Dominik Szoboszlai. Then Darwin rushed in. Of course, it wasn’t the ideal finishing position for him because he favors his right foot, but it was still a huge opportunity.

“I think we are all disappointed, but usually, when a player misses a chance like that, they feel more frustration than anyone else.”

Adding to the controversy, Núñez stormed off the pitch immediately after the final whistle, removing his shirt and heading straight to the dressing room while the rest of the team and Slot stayed to acknowledge the fans. His reaction raises questions about his mentality and role in the squad as Liverpool push for the title.
