Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso have both indicated that they want to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans together in the future . The duo, who together hold six world championships in Formula 1 , will do so in one team and it was expected that Jos Verstappen would also join them, but that is no longer the case.
According to Max himself, his father has chosen to withdraw and not to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans anymore, if it ever actually happens that Verstappen Jr. participates in the long distance race together with Fernando Alonso. In conversation with Mirror Sport, the Red Bull driver says that both Alonso and himself know that they want to do it, but that Jos has withdrawn.
“It’s in the back of our minds, we know we want to do it. He [Jos Verstappen, ed.] is still very good at it, [but] he doesn’t want to do it. He just doesn’t want to do it anymore. But that’s fine, let’s see what happens. A lot can happen. There are a lot of great drivers to choose from. I also have a lot of friends who race, so it will be difficult to pick one,” Verstappen begins.
A light rider
Although Verstappen makes it clear that he has multiple options to place in one team, together with Fernando Alonso, his preference clearly lies with a driver who is a bit lighter. This is because there is no minimum weight in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which ensures that a team with light drivers has an advantage, because that car simply weighs less than the others and is therefore faster, but also uses less fuel – even if the differences are small.
According to Max, it is therefore necessary to find another light driver – in addition to Alonso – as Verstappen himself is quite heavy for the standards of an F1 driver: “The only thing is that there is no minimum weight for the driver for Le Mans. I am a quite heavy competitor, so I would have to find light teammates to compensate for that. Fernando is quite light, so that would be very good for us, but we would have to find one more.”
