Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy leave fans raging as glaring LIV Golf comparison made

The first season of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL will launch on January 7, but golf fans have been left unimpressed after ticket prices for attending the SoFi Center were released

Golf fans on social media have been left fuming at Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s innovative golf league TGL, after the circuit’s ticket prices were released.

On Monday TGL confirmed it will officially launch on Jan. 7, 12 months after the first season was initially set to take place. The league will host 15 regular season game-weeks before the top four performing teams will advance to the semi-finals followed by a season-ending finale.

Fans will get the chance to attend each week of the action based out of the SoFi Center in Palm Beach, but it will cost them a pretty penny, with general admission tickets priced at $160.

As a result, the pricing did not go down well with most. Taking issue on social media, one fan tweeted: “What are we doing charging anything over $40? Nobody is asking for this let alone for $160.. I’d rather go play real golf,” whilst a second added: “They’re charging to watch SIM golf?”

The criticism did not stop there though, with a third fan tweeting: “$160? Maybe $16. Seems like a stretch to justify something. If you want people to show up and garner support, make it inexpensive and then you’ll find the supply & demand.”

Another then posted: “I paid $165 for Sunday at the president’s cup and got to stand 5 feet from any golfer I wanted to follow. Kind of laughable,” before a fifth golf fan went on to post: “I can not see the appeal for watching this in person. Love seeing great golf courses in person but this is like paying to go to a bar to watch a game.”

The league has drawn comparisons to the PGA Tour’s rivals at LIV Golf, having brought in a team concept as well as taking steps to modernize professional golf, similar to the breakaway league. In comparison general admission passes for LIV’s last event of their 2024 regular season in Chicago this month were priced at $43 for the opening round, $52 on Saturday, and $45 on the final day.

Despite the criticism, TGL founders Woods and McIlroy will be hoping the league takes off quickly, having been dealt a number of setbacks since first revealing the idea in 2022. Originally, the PGA Tour duo had stamped in January of this year to launch their innovative league.

Last November however Woods and McIlroy were forced to postpone their maiden season, following severe damage to their SoFi Center home. In a bid to sure up the venue, league bosses reportedly expensed a whopping $50 million according to The Palm Beach Post.
