‘We’ll see what can happen’ – Tyrone Green coy on Springboks future as international decision date looms

Harlequins full-back Tyrone Green remains hopeful of an international call-up – of any description – but knows that will only come if he continues to excel at club level.

Since arriving from the Lions in 2020, Green has become one of the Premiership’s most potent attacking players, and his form has earned him high praise across the board.

An international call-up has somehow alluded him thus far, but Green could soon play on the Test stage as he becomes eligible to play for England as of July next year as well as his native South Africa.

As Green’s decision day looms large over him, he has detailed he will cross that bridge when it comes.

“That’s a bridge I’d have to cross when I get there,” he told Planet Rugby. “But at the moment I’m putting all international things behind me and try to get more silverware at Harlequins. We had two good opportunities last year, and we let both slip. My mindset is purely on trying to get one trophy this season.”

International rugby, under whatever umbrella, is a dream all professional players have in their careers, and Green is no exception.

“As a kid, that’s the dream,” he said. “Boys in England too, it’s their dream to play for England, so it’s always the dream.”

Green coy on international future

His international future is a hot topic at the moment, due to his fantastic performances since joining Quins. Green boasts an impressive strike record of 25 tries in his 77 games to date for the Londoners, and has started 71 of those games in the process. He was also influential in their against-the-odds Premiership title victory in 2021.

Despite his outstanding form, alongside South African international Andre Esterhuizen, the Springboks have not come calling; and he told Planet Rugby that head coach Rassie Erasmus hasn’t been in touch this summer either.

“No, nothing yet. I’m in the off-season now so haven’t been playing much, I haven’t heard anything. When the season starts again we’ll see how things go in terms of performance, and see what can happen from there.”

Green also admitted he faces a tough challenge getting into this current Springboks side, due to the players currently at Erasmus’ disposal and their current form in the Rugby Championship.

“It’s tough though (getting into the Springboks), they’ve got a good team and they’ve got two World Cup wins and I need to do a lot to get into that team. I just have to keep putting my head down and doing what I can do, and if we can get more trophies, more wins and better performances who knows what can happen.”

Fitting into the new Boks?

This could be the perfect time for Green to come into the Springboks squad though.

The recent acquisition of Tony Brown as attack coach has rapidly reinvented the Springboks attack, with much more of a focus on free-flowing, fast rugby; ring any bells?

Green already plays this exact style for Harlequins, and he believes the new South African mantra could suit him better.

“I think with Tony Brown coming in, they’ve added that attacking flair to them,” he told Planet Rugby. “Sacha (Feinberg-Mngomezulu) has taken off, (Aphelele) Fassi is playing so their attack has lifted and Damien (Willemse) will come back in and add a bit more to that.

He added: “I think they do have that attacking notch which suits me a little bit better, but as I say the only thing I can do is keep pushing and play to the best of my ability and see where it goes from there.”

It remains to be seen if Green will get an international call-up soon, but if South Africa don’t take him soon he might feature in the England rose next year, with reports suggesting Steve Borthwick could be keen to draft Green into his squad.
