Not a clue where Aaron Rodgers gets some of the ideas that kick around in his head, nor are his whereabouts 100% confirmed re: missing the New York Jets’ mandatory minicamp. But man, if he can’t absolutely sling a football and stir the pot by speaking his mind.
Rodgers’ go-to guy for a long time in Green Bay was Davante Adams, who left the Packers after demanding to be traded to the Raiders. Vegas hasn’t been too kind to Davante. There’s a clip from Netflix’s Receiver documentary series that shows how he literally signed off on benching Jimmy Garoppolo.
I’ve covered the shambolic Josh McDaniels catastrophe of a coaching tenure in this space plenty. Not to say Jimmy G is a total scrub, but Davante wasn’t even on board with him as the Raiders’ starting QB before last season.
Now the Silver and Black have a choice between Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew. In an AFC West division with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert being coached by Andy Reid and Jim Harbaugh respectively. That’s not great. Davante will produce no matter who’s under center, but let’s face it, he could use some help.
Only two years remain on Davante’s contract after this season, none of which are guaranteed. Assuming the Raiders struggle as expected, there will be speculation of a Rodgers reunion anyway. Hey, why not get started on that a little early?
NFL fans live for drama like this in the offseason. It’s easily the most notable, star player storyline to surface in weeks. And it’s that simple of a quote from Rodgers that gets the job done.
In breaking down this story initially, my assumption was that Davante is headed to the Jets in 2025. What if Gang Green struggles, though? What if the Rodgers-led, Nathaniel Hackett-called offense doesn’t take flight in New York? No income tax in Vegas. Rodgers is very familiar with Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, a longtime Packers assistant. Then, my goodness, having Mahomes, Herbert and Rodgers in the same division? Even for one season that’d be incredible.
Rodgers to Vegas suddenly feels a lot spicier than I would’ve thought. Still, I’d say Davante to the Jets is more likely, if only because the Jets don’t have many must-keep free agents in 2025 to worry about paying, with easily over $60 million to spend. I don’t know if the Raiders would mortgage valuable future first-rounders to get Rodgers, especially since they aren’t in as good of shape cap-wise as the Jets are.
Whatever it looks like, seeing Davante and Rodgers share the field again would be a treat. We’ll see if there’s enough time for Rodgers to get that done. He still needs to prove himself in his age-41 season coming off that torn Achilles.
Of course, maybe we’ll just have to settle for the Pro Bowl…
