Nicki Minaj just took to her Twitter to give us all a much needed lesson on 𝓈ℯ𝓍ism in the music industry, specifically when it comes to non-male identifying hip-hop artists.

Nicki spoke up following a video posted to Twitter from the rapper Russ, who said in a recent interview that people “need to start putting more respect on Nicki Minaj.” She responded by retweeting the clip and thanking Russ, but then divulged how hard it is for women to make it in music.

She tweeted, “In any field, women must work TWICE as hard to even get HALF the respect her male counterparts get. When does this stop?” Nicki further questioned why it seems that so many musicians are quick to work with males in the field, but not women saying, “The greats collaborated w/Drake, Kendrick & Jcole b/c they’re dope MC’s. They collab’d w/nicki cuz someone pulled a gun to their heads…” She then continued, “Putting ppl in the same sentence as me after my 10 years of consistent winning. What are you teaching THEM? They’d never do this to a man.”

In case there was any doubt from her followers of the struggles women face, Nicki also went back nearly seven years to an eerily foreshadowing tweet from rapper Kendrick Lamar who wondered at the time why men seemed to hate Nicki Miniaj more than women did. She reposted it calling it, “telling and scary,” saying that she’d “have to wear some baggy pants n timbs for men to openly give props.”

That said, Nicki has never been shy about speaking up and showing her support for fans and fellow female musicians, and it’s high time the music industry starts following suit.
