After Cam Davis took home the Rocket Mortgage Classic title for the second time in three years, a former coach of none other than the great Tiger Woods took the opportunity to dig into the current state of affairs in the world of golf. Hank Haney, the coach in question, tweeted that the “corrupt golf media” refuses to discuss the fact that currently, PGA Tour wins are easier than ever to come by, due to the dilution of talent in the wake of the PGA/LIV Tour split.
Despite the decline of his golf career, or perhaps due to it, Woods has been in the news more than once lately, between reports of his transition to a senior tour, and the delightful inclusion of his son Charlie in the aging legend’s preparation for the US Open. However, this headline is a different one, as Tiger himself hasn’t really done anything; he’s just pulled into the narrative by association.
Haney’s narrative is a bit puzzling, considering the fact that the narrative to which he’s alluding has been all over the place, due in large part to current world #1 Scottie Scheffler’s current run of dominance, and debates over whether it would have happened in previous eras of the tour.
Of course, no golfer has ever matched Woods’s peak level of performance; perhaps Scheffler’s challenge to that notion has Haney feeling defensive, as a small part of that historic period in the game’s history.
