Warner Bros. is set to release a new live-action “The Lord of the Rings” film series in 2026, focusing on Andy Serkis’ character Gollum. Original trilogy filmmaker Peter Jackson, along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, will produce, ensuring involvement at every stage. The project, titled “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” is in early script development by Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. Serkis will direct and star, with Ken Kamins as executive producer.
This initiative was announced after a deal in 2023, brokered by Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, to produce multiple films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. Additionally, an animated film, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set for release. The original trilogy, grossing nearly $3 billion globally, received widespread acclaim, winning 17 Academy Awards.
