Manchester City may decide against offering Kevin De Bruyne a new contract at the Etihad, according to reports.

De Bruyne hasn’t featured under Pep Guardiola since the opening day of the season due to an ongoing thigh injury, with the 31-year-old not expected to return to action until the New Year.

Despite consecutive Premier League defeats to Wolves and Arsenal, City are managing to cope in the Belgian’s absence.

The reigning champions returned to the summit of the top-flight on Saturday, after goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland ensured a 2-1 win over Brighton.

But while there is no question De Bruyne’s creativity has been missed, the midfielder’s days could be numbered at the Etihad, following reports that the club may decide against extending his contract.

That’s according to Football Insider, who claim that “there are concerns about the increasing number of injury problems De Bruyne is suffering in recent seasons.”

The publication adds that there is “no urgency” to sit down and discuss a contract renewal, with talks likely to take place in around 12 months’ time.

De Bruyne’s current deal, which reportedly makes him by far and away the highest earner in the Premier League, is due to expire in 2026.

However, it is also said that “there is likely to be a willingness from both parties to iron out a new deal as things stand.”

De Bruyne made 49 appearances last term, scoring 10 goals and providing 31 assists during City’s treble winning campaign.

While the former Wolfsburg and Chelsea midfielder has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best ever players, meaning he would not be short of offers should City decide to cut ties.
