Liverpool have crowned a new hero after Luis Suarez-esque moment in front of the Kop

LIVERPOOL 3-1 LEICESTER: Dominik Szoboszlai’s sublime strike helped Reds earn a 3-1 win over their Championship opponents and secure their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round

Make way for a new Anfield hero.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s name may be difficult to pronounce, but it will still be on the lips of the Liverpool faithful, after a stunning, sublime strike to win an enthralling Carabao Cup tie.

The Hungary international had barely been on the pitch for five minutes before he plucked a ferocious missile of a shot from nothing, 25 yards from goal, which screamed into the roof of the net.

It was Souness at his swankiest, McDermott goal of the season magic, or in more recent times, as sweet as Suarez. And he nearly did it again at the end, as Leicester took cover under his bombardment.

It turned a game Liverpool had again offered a head start in, as Leicester capitalised on a lack of VAR to go ahead in the third minute, and then fought bravely to cling on to.

Jurgen Klopp was apoplectic on the touchline for that early Leicester goal which set the tone for so much of this Carabao Cup tie, when Reds defender Kostas Tsimikas was clearly fouled – hacked through the back of his achilles, to set Leicester on a quick break.

And when the pass from Yunus Akgun was sent forward to young winger Kasey McAteer there was more than a hint of offside as he sprinted clear of the defence and cooly slotted past Caoimhin Kelleher with a fine finish.

If that had Klopp screaming on the touchline, then he was almost silenced with shock when his exciting young star Ben Doak dashed into the penalty area, and clearly had his standing foot taken by an unwise lunge from James Justin.

Liverpool, though, still had the chances to have made the tie comfortable even before half time, but spurned them with some wasteful finishing, the worst miss coming from one of their best finishers, Diogo Jota.

He somehow contrived to almost kneel over the ball when he had a simple chance at the far post, during a wild 12th minute, when Liverpool had four golden opportunities.

From that miss, Doak saw a shot saved, and then from the resulting corner, first Cody Gakpo miscued in front of goal, and then the lively Doak smashed another shot goalwards, only to see it crash off the bar down onto the line.
