Mohamed Salah admits contract doubts as Jurgen Klopp defends selection

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has taken to social media to share the inner workings of the negotiations that eventually saw his future with the Reds decided amid growing interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia

Mohamed Salah has revealed for the first time there were real doubts that his Liverpool contract would be extended last summer.

The Egyptian forward has seen his future with the Reds called into question on a number of occasions. And he looked closer to the exit door than ever in July 2022.

The former Roma and Chelsea star had just 12 months left on his contract at Anfield, with bosses facing the prospect of selling him or risk losing him for free the following summer. Salah eventually committed his future to Liverpool with a new three-year contract.

However, that did not always look like being the case. As part of a Harvard study, the 31-year-old has opened up on the negotiations that took place between him, Liverpool and his agent Ramy Abbas Issa.

A document shared on Salah’s Instagram profile begins with a message from representative to player saying: “I am starting to fear that we may not be able to come to an agreement on a new contract, Mohamed – their latest offer is still very far from what we want.”

The study further details how talks were ongoing with Salah enjoying a holiday in Egypt following his sensational 2021/22 campaign. Explaining the relationship between him and representative Issa, the Liverpool forward said: “We are partners. I know he’ll always do what is best for me.”

Details are then shared on the concerns over the talks not reaching an acceptable conclusion. The document reads: “Salah, long optimistic that his club would present a satisfactory offer, for the first time had to face the possibility that his long-term future might be with another club.”

Salah also gave his view on the situation by explaining what his desire was. “I want to stay with Liverpool but the club needs to show that they want me to stay as well,” he explained.

Despite those fears, Salah eventually did put pen to paper on a new deal. That renewed contract sees him tied down to Liverpool until the summer of 2025. There is however still some doubt over his future.

Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad were hugely interested in signing him this summer. They lodged a series of big-money bids for his services – the highest sitting around £150m – but Liverpool were not in any mood to sell.

The 31-year-old has been in excellent form since that interest. In seven appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this term, Salah has four goals and as many assists. He extended that electric form in the Reds’ 3-1 Premier League win against West Ham with the opening goal.
