What a turnaround! Alejandro Garnacho stars as Marcus Rashford and Antony score for Man Utd in comeback win over Lens

Manchester United returned to Old Trafford for the first time this summer after a whirlwind tour of the US to take on last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up Lens.

But a poor first-half display threatened to make United’s homecoming anything but triumphant. Mason Mount scuppered an opportunity to open his United account despite finding himself inside the six-yard box with an open goal.

Meanwhile, Andre Onana’s teething problems as the club’s new No 1 continued as the summer signing was caught off his line early in the first-half allowing Florian Sotoca to put the visitors in front.

United would right the ship in the second half thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Casemiro, as the hosts came from behind to secure victory in their penultimate pre-season game.

With the return of the Premier League fast approaching, Mail Sport takes a look at some of the things we learned from Saturday’s pre-season friendly.

ONANA BRINGS RISKS

For all the benefits Andre Onana will bring to Manchester United, there is an inherent danger about a keeper playing so far out of his goal and it was ruthlessly exposed on the Cameroonian’s debut in the 3-1 win over Lens.

Onana’s ability with the ball at his feet and willingness to come well outside his box will help United’s build-up play in a way David de Gea simply could not.

But it also means that when a move breaks down, Onana is in danger of being out of position and that is exactly what happened in the first half at Old Trafford when Diogo Dalot’s horribly misplaced pass gifted possession to Florian Sotoca.

The Frenchman immediately saw United’s new goalkeeper way off his line and floated an exquisite chip into the net from 40 yards with Onana desperately trying to get back.

Erik ten Hag has worked with Onana before at Ajax and will no doubt accept it as occupational hazard. The hope is that he’s well worth the risk.

MOUNT MISFIRES AGAIN

Onana wasn’t the only United new-boy to experience a few teething problems on his Old Trafford debut.

Mason Mount has impressed in pre-season since his £70m move from Chelsea, adding a dynamism to United’s midfield that Ten Hag felt was missing.

But when Mount was presented with a golden opportunity to score his first United goal at Old Trafford in the 15th minute, he fluffed it completely.

Bruno Fernandes released Alejandro Garnacho with an exquisite crossfield pass and the young Argentina winger pulled the ball back for Mount. It looked certain that United’s new £70million man would score as he sized up a shot, but Mount somehow failed to make any significant connection and the opportunity was gone.

It was only a minor blip for Mount who was able to see the funny side, and he will be confident that his first Old Trafford goal won’t be too long coming.

HOJLUND IS UNVEILED

Rasmus Hojlund  was paraded before the Old Trafford crowd before kick-off but United’s new £72m signing from Atalanta won’t be fit for the first few games as he reaches match fitness after a minor injury in pre-season.

United already knew that Hojlund would need time to adapt to English football, with Marcus Rashford primed to start the campaign at centre-forward after top scoring with 30 goals last season.

Rashford certainly looked up to the task against Lens as he scored United’s equaliser – latching onto Antony’s pass and scoring with an effort that took a touch off Kevuin Danso – before starting an excellent move that ended with Antony scoring the second from Alejandro Garnacho’s pass. Casemiro got the third although whether his header from Luke Shaw’s free kick was intentional is another matter.

Some of United’s attacking play was really slick and Ten Hag will be happy with how well his forwards linked up. Anthony Martial is another option but the it’s unlikely the injury-plagued Frenchman will be fully fit in time for the new season having not featured on United’s tour of the US.

TEN HAG’S SELECTION DILEMMAS

United have another friendly against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Sunday when Ten Hag will field an entirely new starting XI, but was this the team that will kick off the new season against Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday, August 14?

The only two positions that seem up for debate are right-back and left-wing, with Diogo Dalot and Alejandro Garnacho getting the nod here.

Dalot didn’t help himself with the awful pass that led to United falling behind in the first half, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka could easily replace him.

With Marcus Rashford playing through the middle, Garnacho started ahead of Jadon Sancho on the left and gave a very good account of himself before making way for Sancho towards the end.

Garnacho was a constant threat and looked very lively. Sancho, on the other hand, performed well as a false nine on tour but doesn’t bring the same penetration on the flank as Garnacho.

Alejandro Garnacho’s exciting display bolstered his hopes of being a regular starter in the coming season
