Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson lead tributes to Jordan Henderson

Famous footballers from across the world have reacted to Jordan Henderson‘s emotional farewell video after the Liverpool captain confirmed his departure from the club on social media earlier today.

Henderson confirmed he would be putting an end his 12-year association with the Premier League giants by sharing an emotional video ahead of his controversial move to Steven Gerrard‘s Al-Ettifaq.

During the clip, Henderson was heard saying: ‘I am not sure I have any words to sum up how I am feeling right now. I am in the dressing room for the last time and as you can imagine it is very emotional.

‘I need to somehow explain what these last 12 years have felt for me and my family. I can still remember that night in June 2011 clearly. I was excited and then nervous as the move from Sunderland became reality.

‘It was hard leaving there, I have to be honest. My home town, my club, but when Liverpool comes calling you don’t say no. Driving through those old Melwood gates, meeting Damien, the spinning feeling in my stomach, meeting Sir Kenny, it feels like yesterday.

Henderson’s team-mates commented on his post – thanking him for his services to the club

‘Looking back at that footage, I am just a kid. Who would imagined looking back at that night how the next 12 years would go. I can’t lie. There have been really hard times but when I look back at my career at Liverpool, it will always be the good times that I remember.’

Famous footballers across the world were quick to react to Henderson’s video and took to social media to congratulate the England international on his storied career at Liverpool.

Henderson’s team-mates also commented on his post – thanking him for his services to the club. One of the first to comment was Virgil van Dijk. He wrote: ‘Captain, leader, legend!’.

Alisson Becker posted a teary-eyed emoji alongside a love heart, while Andy Robertson wrote: ‘Love you brother’. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s upcoming star Harvey Elliott thanked his former captain before calling him and ‘legend’ and a ‘leader’.

Cody Gakpo also responded to the post by writing: ‘Thank you Captain’, while Liverpool youngster Bobby Clark said: ‘All the best’.

Henderson’s England team-mates also took to social media to congratulate the Liverpool captain. Declan Rice wrote: ‘Legend’. Reece James said: ‘Good luck mate. Legend forever.’

Henderson reportedly said his farewells to his team-mates in person on Monday before signing a three-year contract worth around £700,000-a-week with the Saudi Pro League side.

Henderson had undergone a medical in Manchester on Friday ahead of the transfer, and before announcing his Anfield departure on Wednesday, footage emerged of Henderson training with his new Al-Ettifaq team-mates.

It is thought Henderson spoke to Klopp at length about the amount of playing time he’ll get next season, and his future role in the team. He also held discussions with Gareth Southgate over how the move would impact his international future.

Henderson – who lifted seven major trophies including the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Liverpool – felt he would be best to move on from the Reds following the conversation.

Therefore, Henderson took to social media to announce his departure and thank the club for their support over the years.
