Mohamed Salah set to surpass Steven Gerrard and rewrite Liverpool’s Champions League history

Mohamed Salah can add another Champions League record to the growing list when Liverpool host Atletico Madrid.

The Reds, of course, finished top of the Champions League league phase last season and will welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield to kickstart the 2025/26 campaign.

Salah ended a six-year drought last time out, when his 95th-minute penalty against Burnley secured a 1-0 win at Turf Moor.

Despite registering two goals and one assist in his opening four Premier League fixtures, it has hardly been a sensational start to the season for the forward.

However, Salah, who is already the Reds’ leading goalscorer in the Champions League, can claim another scalp and take a record from legend Steven Gerrard.

Mohamed Salah can surpass Steven Gerrard at Liverpool

According to BBC Sport, the Egyptian will make his 74th appearance in Europe’s elite competition if he starts against Atletico Madrid, becoming Liverpool’s second-highest appearance maker.

Gerrard made 73 outings in the Champions League for the Reds, and Salah would move ahead of the Scouser and stand only six appearances adrift of leader Jamie Carragher.

Salah was heavily scrutinised by French media last season when Liverpool crashed out of the competition following a penalty shootout loss at Anfield against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

And although Virgil van Dijk backed Salah for the Ballon d’Or, the Reds’ failure to win the competition appears to be significantly harming his chances, with Ousmane Dembele among the favourites to be named the winner on Monday.

Salah’s form has been concerning at Anfield, but the Reds’ talisman is also adapting to a new-look side and learning to play alongside his new Liverpool teammates.

The 33-year-old notched three goals and four assists in nine Champions League outings last season and has shown incredible consistency in Europe throughout the years – he will be ready to face Atletico Madrid.

Who are Liverpool’s top appearance makers in the Champions League?

While Salah is aiming to surpass Gerrard and chase down Carragher, former left-back John Arne Riise sits behind the forward with 68 Champions League outings for the Reds.

And only one player is behind the Norwegian: Liverpool legend Sami Hyypia, who completes the top five all-time appearance makers at Anfield.

Andy Robertson could also surpass former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold if he makes three outings this year and stands an outside chance of catching Hyppia with 59 outings to his name.

Alisson and van Dijk also appear likely to feature in the top ten this season, with the Reds pair having made 52 appearances each, just four behind former goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
