Scottie Scheffler season in 10 pictures as caddie misses out on $360k

Scottie Scheffler claimed his fifth victory of a remarkable season on Sunday, coming from four shots behind to beat Bob MacIntyre to the BMW Championship title at Caves Valley.

The four-time major champion lurked ominously in the Scotsman’s rear-view mirror at the start of the final round in Owings Mills, Maryland, and the pressure told as MacIntyre looked a shadow of the man he was for the opening 54 holes.

Scheffler carded a three-under-par 67 to finish at 15-under for the week, two strokes clear of European Ryder Cup star MacIntyre. It was a bittersweet day for the world No. 1, winning for the first time in his professional career without trusted caddie Ted Scott on the bag.

Scott, who helped Scheffler transform his career when joining forces in 2021, was absent from the BMW Championship to tend to an undisclosed family matter, which saw him rush home and miss the final round of last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Michael Cromie, who caddies for Chris Kirk, stood in for Scott at Caves Valley, and he banked the biggest paycheck of his career.

Caddies typically receive in the region of 10 per cent of players’ winnings, and Scheffler received $3.6 million for winning, meaning Cromie is in line for a windfall in the region of $360,000 — more than he has ever earned in a single event with six-time PGA Tour winner Kirk.

It was the latest chapter in a sensational season for Scheffler. With two major championship triumphs and three other big wins, it is one that he will never forget.

Freak Christmas Day injury

Scheffler started the season on the back foot after suffering a hand injury that required surgery in a freak accident while preparing Christmas dinner. But he was determined to come back fighting and he was hard at work in the gym in January ahead of his PGA Tour return.

Frustrating start

The world No. 1 was understandably rusty through the early weeks of the season. He played plenty of good golf and produced results others would be envious of, including a T3 at the Genesis Invitational, but he was lacking the touch and precision that led him to nine wins in 2024.

Trending upwards

Scheffler’s season was steadily gathering momentum by the time the Masters came around, and a fourth-place finish at Augusta National in April, while not being close to his best form, gave him plenty of confidence that a return to winning ways was just around the corner.

Lapping the field

That first win of the season duly arrived three weeks later at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Scheffler won by a remarkable eight shots at TPC Craig Ranch, sending a resounding reminder of his abilities to the world of golf.

Back to his best

Scheffler had his hands on silverware again two weeks later, cruising to victory at Quail Hollow to win the PGA Championship and lift the coveted Wanamaker Trophy. He beat Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, and Davis Riley to top spot by five shots to win his third major title.

Doing the business at Jack’s place

Scheffler has plenty in common with the legendary Jack Nicklaus, so it was only fitting that he won the Memorial Tournament at The Bear’s Muirfield Village club in Dublin, Ohio in June, defending the title he claimed for the first time in 2024.

Open dominance

Scheffler had struggled to produce his best form in links golf over the years, but he arrived at Royal Portrush in June as the favorite to lift the Claret Jug, and he delivered on that promise. The 29-year-old grabbed control of the tournament with a brilliant second round and never looked like stumbling from there, winning by four shots in Northern Ireland to claim his fourth major.

Family first

Scheffler said before The Open that he would never prioritize golf ahead of his family, and there were wholesome scenes at Royal Portrush as he celebrated with wife Meredith and their son, Bennett.

The best since Tiger

There were shades of Tiger Woods as Scheffler produced what will become an iconic moment at the 17th hole at the BMW Championship on Sunday. The world No. 1 holed an incredible chip to stick the dagger into Bob MacIntyre’s hopes of victory, raising his club in the air in anticipation as the ball crept towards the hole before dropping in the front door and sending the crowd wild.

Special memories

The win at Caves Valley gave the Scheffler clan yet another chance to celebrate a famous victory for the world No. 1, who is in a league of his own right now.
