Bryson DeChambeau is making a comeback to the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2021, as no other American players managed to surpass him in the standings during the final week of qualifying for the six automatic spots on the U.S. team.

The BMW Championship marked the final tournament to count towards the U.S. Ryder Cup ranking points, with the top six players selected to the team. Already long qualified, Scottie Scheffler took victory a day after receiving an official PGA Tour warning which left him frustrated.

He sent a message to his caddie, Ted Scott, who missed his latest lucrative win. Scheffler will be joined on the Ryder Cup team by DeChambeau, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley and Harris English with the rest of the team to be determined by captain’s picks.

DeChambeau will be the second LIV Golf player to represent the Americans in consecutive Ryder Cups, following Brooks Koepka who was a captain’s pick in 2023.

U.S. captain Keegan Bradley had hinted that DeChambeau would be part of the team regardless. The U.S. Open champion from last year, he scored significant points by playing in the final group with Rory McIlroy at the Masters, where DeChambeau tied for fifth, and finishing as a runner-up in the PGA Championship five shots behind Scottie Scheffler.

DeChambeau ended up at No. 6 in the standings. Harris English surpassed him with his tie for 12th in the BMW Championship to finish at No. 5, qualifying for his first team independently.

English was a captain’s pick for the 2021 matches at Whistling Straits. All the top six spots – except for DeChambeau – were practically secured going into the final qualifying event.

Justin Thomas would have needed to finish around the top 10 to replace DeChambeau. Instead, he will need to rely on a captain’s pick for the second consecutive Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup takes place Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black. Bradley will reveal six captain’s picks on Aug. 27, the Wednesday following next week’s Tour Championship.

“Most years it seems very obvious,” Scheffler said of the U.S. team. “Once we continue to keep playing next week, it will become more obvious. Right now, I think a couple of spots are still up for grabs.”

The Tour Championship serves as a final tryout for Bradley, who is contemplating selecting himself as a pick after placing 11th in the standings. Thomas ranked No. 7 followed by Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Maverick McNealy, Bradley, Brian Harman, Andrew Novak, Cameron Young and Patrick Cantlay.

All potential captain’s picks will compete at East Lake next week for the Tour Championship. Europe’s qualification period concludes next week at the British Masters – golfers like Shane Lowry at the Tour Championship and Tyrrell Hatton at LIV Golf cannot earn points.

This secures Hatton at No.5 a guaranteed spot on another squad. Lowry, who took Straka’s No.6 position, can only be overtaken by Rasmus Hojgaard next week. Luke Donald also gets six captain’s selections.
