‘General Hospital’ star talks about real-life and TV sons having autism

General Hospital’s Wally Kurth Opens Up About Autism: A Heartfelt Journey from Screen to Reality

In an emotional and eye-opening segment aired on Wave 31, “General Hospital” star Wally Kurth shared his profound connection to a storyline that resonates deeply with both his professional and personal life—autism. As the soap opera continues to shine a light on this critical issue during Autism Awareness Month, Kurth’s portrayal of Ned, a stepfather navigating the complexities of a 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 diagnosed with autism, has struck a chord with viewers and families alike.

Kurth, who has been a fixture on “General Hospital,” revealed that the character of Ned is not just a role but a reflection of his own experiences as a father to a son on the autism spectrum. “When he was young, I knew that he was different. I knew that he was processing things differently,” Kurth shared, emphasizing the challenges and revelations that come with raising a 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 with unique needs. His candid discussion sheds light on the emotional journey that many parents face when confronted with an autism diagnosis.

This week’s episodes highlighted the struggles of Ned and his wife, Olivia, portrayed by actress who expressed initial disbelief and defensiveness about their son Leo’s diagnosis. Kurth’s character is depicted as more accepting, willing to listen to specialists and understand the nuances of his son’s behaviors. “I think parents have to accept it, which is really difficult. They expect a typical 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥, and sometimes they get a different 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥,” Kurth explained, encapsulating the emotional turmoil that often accompanies such news.

The storyline is particularly poignant as it features Leo, played by young actor Easton Sweda, who is also on the autism spectrum. Kurth’s ability to connect with Sweda on set is a testament to his understanding of the challenges faced by autistic 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren. “I can kind of corral his energy and put my hands on his shoulders to help him focus,” Kurth said, illustrating the compassion and patience that is essential in both parenting and acting.

As the narrative unfolds, viewers are witnessing a family grappling with the realities of an unexpected diagnosis, showcasing that no two parents react the same way. Kurth’s portrayal offers a glimpse into the journey of acceptance, highlighting the importance of support and understanding within families. “I was there for Olivia. We got this. He’s going to be okay,” Kurth remarked, reinforcing the message that love and resilience can triumph in the face of adversity.

The storyline is not just about the diagnosis; it’s a celebration of the individuality of those on the autism spectrum. “It’s helpful for viewers to understand that everyone’s on their own journey,” Kurth noted, emphasizing that autism is just one aspect of a person’s identity.

As “General Hospital” continues to explore this vital topic, fans can look forward to seeing how Ned, Olivia, and Leo’s family dynamics evolve in the coming weeks. The show promises to depict a realistic and heartfelt journey of growth, acceptance, and unconditional love.

Tune in to “General Hospital” every weekday at 1 PM on Wave 31 and witness a narrative that is as enlightening as it is entertaining.
