Darwin Núñez’s frustration with his limited playing time under Liverpool manager Arne Slot has erupted into a reported clash, intensifying speculation about his potential move to Napoli and adding to the squad unrest at Anfield
The Uruguayan striker, who scored in Liverpool’s 3-1 pre-season friendly win over Preston North End on July 13, is said to be unhappy with his reduced role, having started just eight Premier League games last season despite the team’s title-winning campaign.
This tension has fueled ongoing transfer talks with Napoli, who see Núñez as a key target, while creating ripples of uncertainty within Liverpool’s squad as they prepare for the 2025/26 season.
According to sources, Núñez confronted Slot over his lack of minutes during a heated exchange at the AXA Training Centre, with the 25-year-old expressing frustration at being benched in favor of players like Cody Gakpo and the late Diogo Jota, even when fit. Slot, known for his tactical discipline, reportedly criticized Núñez’s work rate and consistency, echoing comments made in February 2025 when he said, “I can’t accept if a player doesn’t give everything,” after Núñez’s performances against Wolves and Aston Villa. The clash has deepened the divide, with Núñez feeling sidelined despite his recent goal and tribute to Jota against Preston, where he capitalized on a defensive error to score.
Napoli’s interest in Núñez has gained momentum as a result, with the Serie A champions viewing him as a replacement for Victor Osimhen, who is nearing a move to Galatasaray. Reports indicate Napoli offered €55 million (£47.5 million) with add-ons, which Liverpool rejected, holding firm for €60-70 million (£51-60 million).
However, negotiations have stalled, with Italian outlet Sky Sports Italy noting on July 12 that Napoli are now close to signing Udinese’s Lorenzo Lucca for €34 million, a cheaper alternative.
Despite this, Núñez has given Napoli the “green light,” prioritizing a move to Europe over Saudi clubs like Al-Hilal, who are also circling. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on July 14 that Núñez “continues to wait for Napoli” but “can’t wait forever,” highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The unrest is unsettling Liverpool’s squad, already reeling from Jota’s tragic passing and the emotional weight of the Preston match, where a hologram tribute honored the late forward. Social media posts reflect fan division, with some urging Slot to keep Núñez given the lack of attacking options, while others, like @JotaBelieveIt, argue that Slot’s lack of trust in the striker—evidenced by his preference for Luis Diaz out of position—makes his exit inevitable.
The uncertainty around Núñez, combined with stalled talks for replacements like Alexander Isak or Hugo Ekitike, risks disrupting Slot’s pre-season plans, including upcoming friendlies in Asia and the Community Shield against Crystal Palace on August 10. As Liverpool navigate this turbulent period, Núñez’s clash with Slot threatens to further destabilize a squad striving to maintain unity and focus.
