Scottie Scheffler finally admits the truth behind the viral moment that stole the show at The Open — and it’s even funnier than fans imagined

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top player and 2025 Open Champion, has come clean about the notorious flatulence heard on the live broadcast during his approach on the 17th hole at Royal Portrush, settling the speculation once and for all.

The incident went viral during the first round of The Open, where Scheffler’s manager took a sly dig at Rory McIlroy. The fart in question was captured by a boom microphone at just the moment his shot landed all but perfectly near the pin.

In a refreshingly candid interview on Barstool Sports’ ‘Pardon My Take,’ Scheffler, who forced Phil Mickelson to eat his words after a failed prediction, admitted without hesitation: “Yeah, that was me.” The hosts, visibly amused, pressed further. When asked again if it was truly his, he reiterated, “Oh yeah, it was me.”

He explained that after spending hours on course and trying unfamiliar food, the mishap was inevitable: “You’re out there for like six hours, you’re eating some different food over there. Some stuff’s gonna happen.”

Scheffler also shared that it was fellow golfer Xander Schauffele who first showed him the embarrassing clip post-round.

“He pulls up the video… I see myself standing on 17 and I’m like, ‘Oh, I know what this is,’” Scheffler said with a laugh.

When asked to grade the now-famous sound, Scheffler didn’t shy away. “It had a nice sound to it,” he said. “We were outside, the breeze was blowing. Somebody else caught it.”

The humorous revelation added a lighthearted counterpoint to the drama of The Open, where commentary teams struggled to suppress laughs during live television coverage.

Broadcaster Andrew Cotter, taken by surprise mid-broadcast, quipped, “Just a little bit of wind from behind,” offering a quick-witted moment that only fueled the clip’s viral status.

Despite the unexpected and hilarious distraction, Scheffler remained unfazed. He went on to dominate the tournament in Northern Ireland, delivering a clinical four-shot victory over Harris English to claim the Claret Jug.

It marked his second major title of the year and the fourth of his career, following his earlier win at the PGA Championship.

The moment further solidified Scheffler’s place as one of golf’s modern greats. His consistency, poise under pressure, and sense of humor have made him both a fan favorite and a feared competitor on tour.

McIlroy, who tied for seventh at The Open, acknowledged Scheffler’s remarkable stretch of dominance.

“None of us could hang with Scottie this week, he’s an incredible player,” McIlroy said. “He’s been dominant this week. Honestly, he’s been dominant for the last couple years.”

After the final putt dropped, Scheffler’s first instinct was to find his wife, Meredith. “She knows me better than anyone,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without her support.”

For a week that included flawless iron play, major glory, and one unforgettable audio gaffe, Scheffler took it all in stride — with a grin and, finally, a confession.
