Traore Takes Charge of Ambitious Mission to Defeat 900 Terrorists in Djibo

In a groundbreaking military operation, Burkina Faso’s armed forces have reportedly neutralized over 900 terrorists in the northern town of Jibo, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s ongoing battle against jihadist insurgency. This unprecedented counterterrorism effort, dubbed Operation Chafari Lee, comes in response to a coordinated assault by militants affiliated with Jamaat Naser al-Islam Wal Muslim (JNIM), which overwhelmed local defenses and resulted in tragic losses for Burkinabi forces.

On April 11th, 2025, Jibo faced one of the most sophisticated attacks in recent memory, as over a thousand militants launched a well-organized offensive using light weapons and explosives, targeting military barracks and police stations. The initial chaos led to the temporary loss of control for government forces, prompting an immediate counteroffensive that deployed elite units and advanced military technology, including combat helicopters and drones.

The ensuing confrontation lasted several days, culminating in a decisive victory for the Burkinabi military. Official sources claim that this operation has resulted in the largest single anti-terror success in the country’s history, with numerous high-ranking militant commanders among the casualties. The town of Jibo has been reclaimed, and humanitarian corridors have reopened, providing much-needed relief to civilians who had been cut off for months.

President Ibrahim Troué heralded the operation as a significant victory against terrorism in the Sahel, emphasizing that while this battle has been won, the war is far from over. The scale of this operation sends a clear message to jihadist networks in the region and highlights Burkina Faso’s shift towards a more offensive military strategy, particularly following the expulsion of French forces in 2023.

However, the humanitarian crisis in Jibo remains severe, with many communities still living under the shadow of potential retaliatory attacks. While this tactical victory is crucial, experts warn that sustainable peace will require addressing the root causes of extremism, including poverty and marginalization. As the world watches closely, the future of Burkina Faso’s security landscape hangs in the balance.
