Bryson DeChambeau toiled at Royal Portrush in a nightmare start at The Open Championship with his hopes of winning another major all but over before they began

Bryson DeChambeau had a meltdown on the first day of The Open Championship as his hopes of victory instantly faded away with a +7 opening round of 78. DeChambeau is tied 144th of 156 players after the first day, leaving him facing a scramble to make it to the weekend.

The LIV Golf star, who was warned of the tough links test by Sir Nick Faldo in the build-up, posted his worst Open round to date, failing to register a single birdie. Meanwhile, his fellow LIV star, Jon Rahm lost it at a fan in an angry outburst, later explaining himself after recovering to post a -1 score.

DeChambeau’s problems started on the fourth hole, when a wayward tee shot left him with a knee-high rescue shot which traveled just seven yards. He made double bogey, and never recovered.
