Liverpool responds to rumors of early contract termination for Luis Diaz amid funeral party backlash

Following the heavy criticism surrounding Luis Diaz’s absence from Diogo Jota’s funeral—and his appearance at a party in Colombia—rumors began circulating that Liverpool were considering an early termination of the Colombian winger’s contract. However, the club has now officially addressed the speculation.

Liverpool firmly denied any intention to release Diaz, calling the reports “baseless” and “exaggerated.” Manager Arne Slot also stepped forward to defend the player while acknowledging the sensitivity of the moment.

In a statement to the press, Slot said:

“We understand the emotional reaction from the fans. Diogo was deeply loved by everyone here. But regarding Luis, we have spoken internally. He regrets how his actions were perceived and has expressed his sorrow to the team. He remains an important part of our squad.”

Slot added that the matter was being handled internally with professionalism and compassion, emphasizing the club’s unity during difficult times.

“This is not the time to create division,” Slot continued. “Luis has given his explanation, and while we acknowledge the disappointment it caused, we are focused on healing as a group, not punishing individuals.”

Diaz has also reportedly apologized directly to several teammates, including senior players, during a private team meeting at the AXA Training Centre. While the atmosphere remains tense among some fans, the club is said to be rallying behind Diaz in hopes of moving past the controversy.

Despite the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on the squad, Liverpool is determined to maintain solidarity ahead of the upcoming season. The club’s leadership reiterated that no disciplinary action is currently planned against Diaz, and any future decisions will be based on performance and conduct going forward.

For now, Luis Diaz remains a Liverpool player, and according to Arne Slot, “He’s fully committed to making amends and proving his value—both on and off the pitch.”
