Rickie Fowler involved in another tense exchange with heckler as PGA Tour slump continues

2025 has not been the most kind to Rickie Fowler. The former phenom has just one top-10 finish to his name this year, and he’s currently on the outs of Keegan Bradley’s Ryder Cup team — though he could sneak in backdoor with a late vice-captaincy gig.

A round-two 77 meant Fowler would finish in 36th place at the Travelers Championship last week, but he didn’t leave without a memorable moment.

Once again, the 36-year-old engaged with a heckler. At the 2025 Cognizant Classic, Fowler chirped, “That’s why you’re in the stands,” at a fan.

This time, the six-time PGA winner didn’t do any of the talking. A fan bellowed, “nice lag putt,” after a Fowler putt from off the green came up over 15 feet short of the hole.

“Easy to say over there, buddy,” said Ricky Romano, Fowler’s caddy. Fowler stared at the heckler without flinching, which prompted another fan from the crowd to yell, “No worries, Rick; these guys are fools.”

Fowler’s career peaked in 2014, when the then-brightly dressed young star finished second at the 2014 US Open, second at the Open Championship, and third at the PGA Championship.

He’s amassed six PGA Tour wins over his career, though none since a playoff victory over Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

He’s enjoyed a fair bit of success on the international circuit, having won three Ryder Cups and featured in two more. Fowler is also a three-time Presidents Cup winner.

Despite his poor form, he’s emerged as a candidate for the 2025 Ryder Cup team vice-captain position. I haven’t heard anything on that,” he admitted this week. “Obviously, I’ve loved all the team events I’ve been on and been a part of.

We’ll deal with that if it comes to that. I’m obviously happy to help out, but I know Keegan is working on trying to make his own team. He’s got some great guys at his side helping out. If they want me there, I would hope scheduling and everything would work out…It would be fun to be a part of. We’ll deal with that when it gets to it.

Fowler will head to Silvis, Illinois, for the John Deere Classic. He’ll commence the tournament at 8:40 on July 3 and will hope to make the cut against a crowded field.
