Rory McIlroy’s return date confirmed by Shane Lowry after Masters triumph at Augusta

Shane Lowry has revealed when Rory McIlroy will return to action following his superb success at the Masters.

McIlroy’s victory at Augusta made him just the sixth golfer to have achieved a modern career grand slam.

Following his success, the 35-year-old expressed his delight, with Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods the only other players to have won all of the major tournaments.

McIlroy said: ‘I have dreamt about that moment for as long as I can remember. There were points in my career where I didn’t know if I would have this nice garment over my shoulders, but I didn’t make it easy today.’

‘I’ve carried that burden since August 2014. It’s nearly 11 years. And not just about winning my next major, but the career Grand Slam. You know, trying to join a group of five players to do it, you know, watching a lot of my peers get green jackets in the process.

‘Yeah, it’s been difficult. It was a heavy weight to carry, and thankfully now I don’t have to carry it and it frees me up and I know I’m coming back here every year, which is lovely.’

‘I talked to him [Wednesday] morning. We’re good to go.

‘To be honest, I didn’t want him to feel like he had to play because of me.

‘He’s not letting me down if he wanted to take some time. He feels like he wants to get back out there.’
