The ‘Philly Shell’ is a stance that has quickly become the new zeitgeist of boxing styles thanks to the infamous Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather – with his idiosyncratic approach being second only to Mike Tyson’s ‘Peekaboo’ style in the eyes of the general public.
The seemingly impenetrable defensive stance can be traced back to Floyd’s Uncle Roger as well as his father Floyd Senior – who both had relatively notable careers with the style but never quite reached the heights of the sweet science. And much like a science, the two savants returned to the lab following their retirements – adjusting their theories based on their ring-centric research before passing the style on and publishing their latest revelation: ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd Mayweather.
