D’Wayne Wiggins, the beloved founding member of the iconic R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné!, has passed away at the age of 64 after a courageous year-long battle with bladder cancer. The heartbreaking news was announced on March 7 via the group’s official Instagram account, which stated that he died surrounded by family and loved ones.

Wiggins had been privately dealing with his illness for some time, a fact that became more evident during the group’s reunion tour in 2023, their first in 25 years. Concertgoers noted that he did not appear to be in good health during the performances. Industry insider Artemus Gordon shared on social media that Wiggins had been very ill and explained why the band had not released a DVD of the tour shows.

In recent days, rumors surfaced regarding Wiggins’ critical condition, leading to a statement from his family on March 5 that acknowledged his medical complications and requested privacy during this challenging time. Former bandmate Anon Haley confirmed in a Facebook Live session that Wiggins had been struggling for a while but expressed hope for his recovery.

Wiggins’ final Instagram post was in November, celebrating the anniversary of the group’s 1996 album, “House of Music.” His passing comes on the heels of another tragic loss in the music community, as fans mourn the recent death of Neo Soul artist Angie Stone in a car accident.

Tony! Toni! Toné!, formed in 1986 by Wiggins, his brother Raphael Saadiq, and cousin Timothy Christian Riley, is celebrated for timeless hits like “Anniversary,” “Feels Good,” and “It Never Rains (In Southern California).” The group has left an indelible mark on the R&B landscape, and as tributes pour in from fans and fellow musicians alike, Wiggins’ legacy and impact will undoubtedly be remembered.
