Italian resident Luciano Faggiano and his sons unearthed an ancient underground complex while attempting to repair a broken toilet in their home in Lice, Italy, in 2001.
The excavation revealed a series of historical layers, including a medieval floor, a tomb from the Massabian civilization, and a Roman grain storage chamber.
Authorities halted the unsanctioned archaeological dig after neighbors reported suspicious activity, but Faggiano later received permission to continue under the supervision of heritage officials.
The excavation led to the discovery of numerous artifacts, including ancient vases, jewelry, and frescoes, representing various eras of Lice’s history.
Faggiano ultimately transformed the property into a museum, showcasing the archaeological finds, which has become a top-rated attraction in Lice.
The initial goal of opening a restaurant was abandoned as the focus shifted to preserving and displaying the historical significance of the site.
