Wallabies CONFIRMED: Joe names 16th debutant, Donno starts with Noah injured, Slips to equal Gregan record

Joe Schmidt has made four changes to the starting side from the team edged Argentina by a point last week for game two with a potential debut for Josh Canham off the bench.

Max Jorgensen, who turned 20 this week, gains a first start on the wing with Andrew Kellaway replacing Tom Wright at fullback.

Wright suffered an ankle injury in the opening ten minutes of last week’s game and battled on despite not being at full fitness, Schmidt revealed on Friday. The fullback has been training outside the main group this week.

Kellaway is likely to welcome more action after last week’s game passed him by, chiefly due to the driving rain.

He had one metre gained from one carry and two passes in attack and made one tackle with two missed in defence.

Schmidt said Lukhan Salakaia-Loto had missed out with a shoulder “stinger” while No.10 Noah Lolesio, replaced by Ben Donaldson, has a back injury.

“Tom didn’t pick up too many high-speed metres, was struggling a little bit, but he fought his way through really well,” said Schmidt.

“And Noah, just before he was replaced, got caught awkwardly and he’s just uncomfortable through his shoulder blades, quite high, and is still stiff through there. He ran okay today, but he’s not doing contact at the moment and and if you’re playing Argentina and you don’t do contact, you can’t select him

“Noah, while he’s disappointed, if you’d seen him at training and before training, they’re discussing the strategy around the game for us. He’s absolutely bought into being a squad member and trying to help the others prepare. “

Western Force skipper captain Jeremy Williams comes into the second row alongside Nick Frost with an unchanged back row of Carlo Tizzano, Rob Valetini and Harry Wilson, who will captain the team for a second time.

Former Melbourne Rebel Canham is in line to become Wallaby number 987 and the 16th debutant in 2024, selected as the replacement lock, with Langi Gleeson returning as the replacement back rower.

Canham was a surprise omission from Schmidt’s first squad of the season but is ready to be the next forward option tried by Schmidt as the coach tries to build depth in the Wallabies squad.

“Josh is a good athlete and I think he’s a really promising young player,” said Schmidt. “He’s gone away and put some work in and some of that is just the physical grind of trying to make sure that he’s prepared for Test match rugby.

“You’ve got to get the balance right in having people ready for Test rugby. If you put them in and they’re not physically prepared for it then I think to a degree you set them up to fail and you set the team up to be a little bit vulnerable.

“He’s built a bit of confidence through that work he’s done and we’ve built a bit of confidence in what Josh can deliver. He’s a skilful young man, he’s a competitor and we’re looking forward to seeing how he copes in a fairly hostile environment on Saturday.”

Queensland duo Tate McDermott and Tom Lynagh are the substitute halves, with Josh Flook named on the bench for what would be his third Test in his debut international season.

James Slipper is on the bench and set to equal George Gregan’s record of 139 Tests for the Wallabies. He has been named as the replacement loosehead prop, in a substitute front row that also features Allan Alaalatoa and Josh Nasser.

Jorgensen continues his rise through the ranks with his first selection from the start.

“Max has built his way in. He’s had a couple of runs off the bench which is ideal for him to gain a bit of confidence and for us to know a little bit more about him,” said Schmidt.

“I think when he picked that ball up in space from the cross kick from Tom Wright and accelerated, it’s not very often that [Makazole] Mapimpi is left grasping and that’s the acceleration and footwork that he’s got.

“He didn’t quite hold on to a ball that was promising from Noah in the weekend up the right-hand touch but got some great pressure on the kicker which allowed us to have a line-out on or around the 22 which is where we launched the last attack from that ultimately gave us the opportunity to win the game.

“He’s working really well off the ball which was part of what we wanted him to work on because once he’s on the ball he’s an exciting young rugby player.”
