On-course highlights have been few and far between for Phil Mickelson in 2024. In fact, he has just one top 10 in 12 starts on the LIV Tour, and his best finish outside of that is a 22nd. His decline has reached a point where even Mickelson himself is wondering if it’s soon going to be time to “step aside,” a shocking admission for the uber-confident 54-year-old.
On occasion, though, we still get brief glimpses of the man formerly known as FIGJAM.
We got one such glimpse on Saturday at LIV Greenbrier, where Lefty finished 19 strokes behind winner Brooks Koepka in solo 50th place. He beat only four players the entire week, among them Ian Poulter and Charl Schwartzel. And yet, he may have hit the shot of the tournament, a vintage driver off the deck into the par-5 12th green that set up a prime look at an eagle:
What can ya say. A 300-yard mega slice DOD that he could not have placed in a better spot, resulting in an easy two-putt birdie. He’s still (sometimes) got it.
Now, is he the “DOD KING!” like that LIV fan shouted in that video? Let’s pump the brakes on that. There is only one DOD King.
