After 36 years, Beetlejuice has finally come back to haunt you.
Warner Bros. has released the trailer forย Tim Burtonโs follow-up to his 1988 cult classic horror-comedy โBeetlejuice,โ withย Michael Keatonย reprising his role as the ghoulish title character. The sequel, officially titled โBeetlejuice Beetlejuice,โ is set for release on Sept. 6.
In addition to Keaton, original โBeetlejuiceโ Winona Ryder and Catherine OโHara are back as Lydia and Delia Deetz, respectively.ย Jenna Ortegaย rounds out the family as newcomer Astrid Deetz. Monica Bellucci plays Beetlejuiceโs wife and Willem DeFoe stars as aย โpolice officer in the afterlifeโ and former โB movie action star,โย whose acting s๐๐พ๐๐s help him as an afterlife detective. Justin Theroux also joins the sequel in a new role.
The original โBeetlejuiceโ followed a deceased couple trying to haunt the Deetz family out of their new home with the help of the eccentric ghost Beetlejuice. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis starred as the Maitlands while Jeffrey Jones, OโHara and Ryder made up the Deetz family. The movie developed a cult following after its release and later spawned a hit musical adaptation on Broadway.
Burton announced on social mediaย last November that he had finished filming the โBeetlejuiceโ sequel after a months-long delay due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. In September,ย he revealed to The Independentย that he only had โa day and a halfโ of filming remaining prior to the shutdown.
โI feel grateful we got what we got,โ Burton said at the time. โLiterally, it was a day and a half. We know what we have to do. It is 99 percent done.โ
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, creators of the Ortega-starring Netflix series โWednesday,โ penned the script for โBeetlejuice Beetlejuice.โ
