Mercedes-Benz Group chairman and CEO Ola Källenius recently remarked that Max Verstappen “would look good in silver,” hinting at a potential future collaboration once Formula 1’s rules reshuffle in 2026. Despite the flattering comment, Verstappen has a strong response that reaffirms his commitment to Red Bull.

During the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff clarified that no current talks are taking place with Verstappen, despite earlier considerations to make him the top target to replace Lewis Hamilton for the next season.

Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, having signed a significant contract extension with the team after securing his first title in 2021. The competitive dynamics in Formula 1 are expected to shift significantly with the regulations reset in 2026, and Verstappen will likely remain a highly sought-after driver in the market if he becomes available before his contract ends.

Källenius sees an “opportunity” for Mercedes to return to the forefront of the field with the upcoming rule changes and believes that the Mercedes power unit could be a decisive factor in the team’s performance. Meanwhile, Red Bull is set to create their own power units in partnership with Ford starting in 2026, adding a layer of uncertainty to the sport’s new era.

In response to Källenius’s comment, Verstappen confidently stated: “I look good in red.” He added, “I appreciate the compliment, but my focus is entirely on Red Bull. We have a great team and a lot of exciting challenges ahead. I’m committed to achieving more success with Red Bull and am looking forward to what the future holds for us.”
