Tiger Woods Says 2024 ‘May or May Not Be’ Final US Open; Will Compete in British Open

Tiger Woods has long resisted talking about retirement, but he gave an indication that it is at least on his radar after missing the cut at the 2024 U.S. Open.

Speaking to reporters after Friday’s second round (starts at 2:05 mark), Woods said “it may or may not be” when asked if he thought this could be his final U.S. Open.

Earlier in the same press conference (starts at 1:40 mark), Woods did confirm he will play at the British Open starting on July 18. He said that is his last scheduled event for this year, and then he will “come back whenever I come back.”

It was a sobering moment for Woods after he sounded very optimistic coming into the weekend. He said during his pre-tournament press conference on Tuesday that he felt like his body was in a good place to give him the “strength” to win (starts at :40 mark).

Woods, who began the first round on the back nine, had a solid start. He birdied his opening hole and stayed under par though six holes, but the wheels fell off with five bogeys over his next six holes en route to a four-over par 74.

Friday was a cleaner round for Woods, but he only managed one birdie and shot a 73. This marks the sixth time in eight major tournaments since the 2020 U.S. Open that Woods hasn’t played all four rounds. He has four missed cuts and withdrawn from two tournaments during that span.

After finishing 60th at the Masters, Woods has missed the cut at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open.

Woods will attempt to get back on track at the Open Championship next month at Royal Troon. This will be his third appearance in the tournament since 2019. He hasn’t made the cut at the British Open since finishing tied for sixth in 2018.
