Celtics’ latest move indicates big changes coming in summer

The Boston Celtics have reportedly signed Neemias Queta to a multiyear deal. The rim-running big man has been with the franchise since the start of the season after signing a two-way contract. He is impressed by the limited opportunities that have been afforded to him.

The Celtics had an open roster spot. Converting Queta’s deal will ensure they have a full team heading into the postseason. With his addition, the Celtics now have five big men on the roster. It’s highly unlikely they will retain all five during the offseason.

Luke Kornet and Xavier Tillman will both be unrestricted free agents this summer.

Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford will undoubtedly remain on the Celtics roster beyond the season. Both are under contract. However, Queta’s addition to the mix will likely mean one of Kornet or Tillman can leave in free agency. Tillman recently joined the team via trade ahead of the Feb. 8 deadline.

Nevertheless, Kornet has proved himself to be a valuable backup center on a contending team. His movement and screening ability make him a reliable presence off the bench. Tillman has struggled to leave an imprint on Boston’s roster thus far.

On paper, losing a rotational big man shouldn’t hurt the Celtics. Joe Mazzulla runs multiple iterations of double-big lineups. Therefore, the backup center spot is often elevated into an important role.

Brad Stevens would have been aware of these issues when he signed Queta. He will likely have a plan. Nevertheless, Celtics fans will now enter the offseason expecting to see at least one of their centers change teams, but they will be hoping they’re wearing a championship ring on their way out of the door.
