Overcoming Steven Gerrard, Mohamed Salah became Liverpool’s greatest player in the Premier League era

According to Chris Sutton, a journalist for Mail Sport, it is hard to argue against Mohamed Salah as Liverpool’s best Premier League player of all time—possibly even surpassing the great captain Steven Gerrard.

In the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Saturday, Salah scored for Liverpool once more, helping the Reds escape with a late 2-0 victory.

With Ashley Young sent off for a second yellow card earlier in the game, the Toffees looked likely to come away with a hugely creditable point until the 75th minute.

However, after a Michael Keane handball handed Salah a golden opportunity from the spot, the Egyptian made it 15 consecutive games he had either scored or assisted in, tapping in a second in added time.

As such, it was no surprise that after rescuing his side once again the topic of whether Salah might be the best ever Reds star in the Premier League era, with Mail Sport’s Liverpool specialist Dom King appearing on Its All Kicking Off.

Mohamed Salah was on target twice against Everton prompting debate over whether he is the best ever player in the Premier League for Liverpool

Chris Sutton claimed that he was better than Steven Gerrard by virtue of listing the Premier League title

Liverpool defeated a resolute Everton team reduced to 10 men after Salah calmly converted his penalty.

“Steven Gerrard is the one who—the fact that this debate is even happening—shows what Salah has accomplished in the last seven years.” For years, Steven led the team. King started, “Salah has just been extraordinary since he’s come in.”

“His durability”—he has participated in 227 of the 237 Premier League games that have taken place since his arrival. Additionally, he has scored 194 goals.

“The comparison with the great player that was Steven Gerrard, who never won the Premier League.” It would be very difficult, in my opinion, to contest Mo Salah’s status as Liverpool’s all-time greatest player during the Premier League era.

Salah has won every club trophy available since joining the Reds in 2017, in addition to three Golden Boot trophies, one of which he won in his 32-game debut season.

He left the English top division in 2016 after taking multiple loans, but he returned to the Premier League from Roma, and he has since made a name for himself as one of the best right wings in the world.

But according to King, Salah is much more special and deserving of recognition as a “true great” of the English game, deserving of comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I don’t think people realize that we’re genuinely watching a world-class player, a true great,” he remarked. “I don’t believe he receives as much attention as Ronaldo would have had here.”

Salah scored on Saturday even though it wasn’t his greatest day. When you get at Anfield, all you want is for him to score. The comfort and influence it bestows upon the team during an individual’s zenith.

Steven Gerrard is arguably the greatest ever captain at Liverpool but never won the Premier League

Sutton added that the only player more ruthless than the Egyptian in the Premier League era is Erling Haaland

‘You’re absolutely right, he has taken Liverpool to another level,’ agreed Sutton.

‘The number of games he’s played, the goals he’s scored season after season – he is so reliable. Standing in the tunnel next to players like Shearer, like Larsson, you just know that when the opportunity comes along these players have that reliability.’

Yet Sutton claimed that there was only one player that might have a better ruthless streak in front of goal in the history of the Premier League.

‘It’s more than reliability, it’s ruthlessness, and Salah is every bit as ruthless as any player the Premier League has ever seen, maybe not Haaland though!’
