The Wizards might have to be prepared for Poole taking a lot of shots with the team not having enough scorers.
Considering his offensive wizardry and the Washington Wizards’ need for a go-to scorer, Jordan Poole has the opportunity to become one of the league’s top point-getters this season. Of course, there’s also the possibility of the 24-year-old’s stint in D.C. not panning out the way he expected.
Bill Simmons is not optimistic about the Wizards’ chances of racking up wins once the regular season starts, saying the team lacks an All-Star-caliber player – not even Poole. The longtime sportswriter also had a hilarious prediction for the former Golden State Warriors champion.
“I actually think…now that [Spencer] Dinwiddie, he’s not going to have the ball enough, Jordan Poole is going to be our No. 1 his-teammates-hate-playing-with-him guy,” Simmons said. “That’s my prediction.”
JP is already getting into it with a teammate
Poole gave the Wizards fans a show on Wednesday when the team faced off against the New York Knicks in the preseason. In just three-quarters of action, he scored 41 points on a 52-50-93 shooting clip.
However, his one-track mind may have not sat well with his teammate Deni Avdija, who was open during one possession in the third quarter and may have been expecting a pass from JP. After the guard opted to take and sink a contested 3-pointer, Avdija appeared exasperated.
The two also had a meme-worthy interaction on the bench at some point, although it’s unclear if it occurred before or after the shot.
Even so, it underscores the prospect of the “Poole Party” not becoming a beloved figure among the Wizards players. At this point, it may not matter that much, though, because Washington isn’t expected to be a contender anytime soon and should be looking to bottom out to rebuild through the Draft.
JP as a playmaker
If Poole can tap into his potential as a ball distributor, Simmons’ prediction may not come to pass. It should be noted that despite being a certified bucket, the 24-year-old also displayed his playmaking prowess in Golden State’s motion offense.
In his last two seasons in the Bay Area, Poole dished out 4.3 assists per contest in the regular season, and in the Dubs’ title run in the 2021-22 campaign, he had the third-most average assists with 3.8 apg.
Of course, he is transitioning to a role that requires him to score a lot more and an environment vastly different from the one he had been accustomed to for four seasons. It remains to be seen how well Poole can adapt, although it looks like he is adjusting just fine.
