Depp directed an independent film titled The Brave, in which he starred himself. This was in the ’90s. Now, after twenty-five years, Depp has again turned to the director’s chair as a way of self-expression. The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory star is directing a film called Modi.
Modi is co-produced by Depp and Al-Pacino; the latter is also starring in the film. The cast includes Luisa Ranieri and Riccardo Scamarcio among others. The film is based on famed Italian painter and sculptor Modigliani. Based on Dennis McIntyre’s play Modi, the film is set in post-war Paris and delves into two crucial days of the artist’s life. The filming has already begun filming in Budapest, Hungary.

Depp is clearly keeping it busy by taking on new projects. And his choice of work suggests that he is angling towards small but meaningful projects. There is a lot of speculation if he will resume his most iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise; which he lost after his fallout with Disney when the abuse allegations first emerged.
