Johnny Depp attended the 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival in 2016, along with his then-wife, Amber Heard. He took the Desert Palm Achievement Award or Best Actor for his portrayal of gangster James Bulger in Black Mass. In his acceptance speech, she particularly singled out his wife Heard, and thanked her for putting up with all the characters that he has played. When asked about this particular comment that he made, he told Entertainment Tonight,

“It’s not, It’s not easy for your spouse, in terms of, when you are playing a character, especially with a lot of prosthetics or something like that, and a lot of work to do in terms of transformation. I arrived home one night, I didn’t want to take the Old Man Tonto (from The Lone Ranger) makeup off because I just thought ‘I’ll leave it ’cause I gotta put it on tomorrow morning’. So I went home and slept in it. she was already asleep and I didn’t say anything and then at a certain point, she reached over and put her arm around me and started flipping out. I mean, it was so horrible. It’s funny, at least for me it was funny”

Depp’s hilarious narration seems to reflect the happy times during his marriage with Heard. They were a power couple then with fans going gaga over their various appearances together in movie premieres, events, and other film-related functions. Everything went downhill after a year into their marriage and their court settlements and the discourse around it remains relevant to this day.

After Amber Heard filed accusations of domestic and physical abuse against Johnny Depp and the case went to court, several studios dropped Depp off of their films and projects. He was dropped from his most iconic role of Jack Sparrow in The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and also from portraying Gellert Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts film, being replaced by Mads Mikkelsen.

He recently made a comeback with films, playing King Louis XV in the film Jeanne du Barry which premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. He is also getting ready to direct Al Pacino and Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio in the film Modigliani, which is based on the life of Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani.
