Scottie Scheffler made his thoughts clear on Ben Griffin, his new Ryder Cup teammate, after the two battled it out at the Procore Championship, just weeks before the famed event
Scottie Scheffler made his thoughts known on Ben Griffin, his new Ryder Cup teammate, after giving an insight into Team USA’s preparations heading into this month’s matchup.
Scheffler won the Procore Championship, beating out Griffin by the smallest of margins as the two stars went back and forth in the tournament as a tune-up for the Ryder Cup. Of note, Griffin will be part of his first Ryder Cup team, while the world No. 1 will be part of the competition for the third time.
After the 29-year-old’s win, Scheffler took time to speak on Griffin’s ability heading into the famed tourney. This comes after Team USA made a statement in Napa ahead of the Ryder Cup.
Speaking to reporters after the win, the world No. 1 spoke glowingly of the 29-year-old as the two prepare for the clash at Bethpage Black at the end of the month. “I think Ben always had the belief that he was going to be out here,” he began, per the Bellingham Herald. “I don’t know if he was an accountant or [loan mortgage officer] for that long.”
In the same vein, Scheffler lauded Griffin’s confidence, which is what will make him a key player against Team Europe in the coming days. “When you talk to Ben, he’s a guy that has a lot of confidence, he’s got a lot of self belief. That’s what we love about him being a part of our Ryder Cup team,” he continued.
“I grew up with Ben. He always had the talent to make it out here. He’s been a tremendous putter for his entire — as long as I’ve known him, and his ball-striking has really come around, and he’s also picked up some speed. Ben’s a guy that has always put in I think a ton of work and he’s always looking to improve.
“He’s never lacked confidence and he’s going to be a great part of our Ryder Cup team this year, and I’m sure he’ll be a part of many teams going forward as well.”
Regarding his relationship with Griffin, Scheffler admitted that the 29-year-old was someone he’d been competing with for a long time, which has led to them developing a friendship over the years.
“We used to play practice rounds together in junior and amateur golf. He’s been a buddy of mine for a long time,” he continued.
