There are just a few weeks to go until Team Europe captain Luke Donald names his squad for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black but LIV Golf star Jon Rahm is yet to be given any assurances on his place

Jon Rahm played down suggestions he is a shoe-in for next month’s Ryder Cup and insisted he is just “one of many” players captain Luke Donald is keeping tabs on.

The former world No. 1 is expected to receive one of the six wildcard picks for Team Europe’s squad for Bethpage Black. Rahm won three points from four matches at the 2023 Ryder Cup, but his move to LIV means he no longer receives Official World Golf Ranking points to qualify for the tournament, with the Spaniard currently 21st on the list.

Team Europe skipper Donald has been in touch with Rahm, who was tied for seventh at the U.S. Open in June and tied eighth at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in May. But the 30-year-old, who is currently second in the 2025 LIV Golf standings, denies he is virtually assured his spot in Donald’s plans.

“There’s nothing I can confirm nor deny,” Rahm said.

“But I think he has been texting me like he has been texting quite a few other players that are on that list of the possibility of getting picked.

“Luke is extremely dedicated and very well-organized as a captain, so I think there’s probably about at least 10 names on top of those guys who are qualified that he’s probably constantly texting.

“He might have told some people that they’re – I don’t think he’s actually told anybody they’re in yet because it’s too early. He’s probably waiting until the end of August through the playoffs and our events to maybe start making statements like that.

“In my case, I think I’m just one more of those many names.”

Among the European players currently outside of the top six automatic qualifiers are Masters runner-up Justin Rose, Ludvig Aberg, Viktor Hovland, and Matt Fitzpatrick.

This week’s FedEx Cup play-offs at the St. Jude Championship in Memphis could go a long way to helping Donald make his mind up, with the upcoming BMW Championship later this month the last opportunity for PGA stars to impress before he names his squad.

Meanwhile Rahm has LIV events in Chicago this weekend and Indianapolis next weekend to convince Donald any further.

Speaking in May, Donald said: “I haven’t given anyone the nod. I think it’s a little bit too early for that. We have very in-depth stats.

“We know exactly how these players are playing. We have a great idea of where they stack up against each other and against the U.S.

“In terms of Jon, he’s one of the best players in the world, and I would expect him to be on that team, but I certainly haven’t given him those assurances. He still needs to keep going and playing just like everyone else.”
