Liverpool want to offload him after splashing £79m on Hugo Ekitike and they remain keen on Newcastle’s wantaway star Alexander Isak in a possible £150m transfer.

The Athletic claim Nunez, 26, has been allowed to negotiate with Al-Hilal in recent days and they stepped up efforts to sign him on Sunday.

Other reports allege that he has been offered a three-year contract worth a staggering £18.7m.

AC Milan also had the Uruguayan as a top target and were exploring a deal.

However, the Italian giants are reportedly unable to compete with the cash Al-Hilal have tabled.

Reporter Fabrizio Romano suggested this morning that the player can “fly at any moment for a medical” now the deal has been struck.

Liverpool face Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday and Nunez is therefore unlikely to feature.

A move to Saudi Arabia has been on the cards for Nunez since January.
